His Arrest Went Viral — This Is What Happened Next | Ep. 90 Drew Romo

by luxioflashpublished on December 19, 2025

A single night in Scottsdale detonated a young police officer’s career and exposed the cracks he’d been hiding behind bravado, alcohol, and burnout. The arrest was real, the handcuffs were tight, the firing was immediate — and the shame was crushing. What followed wasn’t a PR campaign or a redemption façade. It was surrender. Drew walked away from law enforcement, got sober, took a huge pay cut to clean bathrooms and stack chairs at a church, and learned humility the hard way. No shortcuts. No ego. Just rebuilding.

Years later, everything resurfaced. The bodycam video from his arrest went viral, reigniting trolls, judgment, and old wounds. Instead of fighting back, Drew chose grace, accountability, and context. And then came the call he never expected: return to policing. Back to the same profession that broke him publicly. Back to the department reviewing the same viral video that destroyed his reputation. He requalified, passed backgrounds, and earned support from command staff. His FTO judged him by who he is now — not who he used to be. Today, Drew serves as a school resource officer, meeting kids in the fragile spaces between crisis and hope.

Drew is clear: justice and compassion aren’t opposites. They’re the two rails a healthy community runs on. His story is proof that a public failure can become a calling, and that a cop can carry both a badge and a broken heart for his city.

In 2017 I worked for a Sheriff’s Department in Louisiana when we went to New Orleans for a training class. While there we went to Bourbon Street after class to drink. In a bar we had a disagreement with a bouncer over not receiving our change for drinks ordered. We left the bar for several hours, but went back on our way back to our hotel. While there the same bouncer jumped on my back when we were leaving. A brawl broke out and all of us got arrested. Later they booked us in jail for several charges. After bonding out we returned to our department to speak to IA, which led to me being suspended, demoted, and reassigned to the jail as a deputy. The others with me were only suspended 3 days. In court all of the charges were dropped after video in the bar showed we attempted to leave the bar when the bouncer attacked me. My department never reviewed any footage or had any evidence that we were in the wrong, and even after all charges were dropped they never admitted they were wrong. It took a year of working in the jail before I was able to go back to patrol, when I had to work my way back to being a sergeant. I never could get over my department not supporting me in a very low time, so eventually I ended up started a new career. Sadly in law enforcement you are guilty no matter what in the eyes of the public, or in the eyes of a department who worried more about political effects of an incident like this. What I will say is this event changed me as a husband, father, and leader at the department. At work I chose to hold my head high and act like none of if bothered me. The jokes of being arrested and the shame of being demoted all the way back to the jail, working with people who only had a year of experience. In silence I suffered quietly. Eventually the Sheriff cracked jokes about it and so did the administration, when the entire time I wanted to ask, why couldn’t you support me or speak to my attorney about what really happened. But their minds had already been made up. The situation gave me a greater respect for people who are booked in jail and have no way to contact their family to let them know what happened and possibly get bailed out. I ended up being a far better supervisor and cop. I was more understanding and cared more about people I had never met! The worst situations can break you, or mold you into the person you’re supposed to be!

Definitely changed my perception of this young man and I’m glad he was given a second chance.
